Why a personal account cannot work
Instagram exposes messaging and comment data only through the Instagram Graph API, and that API is available exclusively to Professional accounts — Business or Creator. Personal accounts have no API surface for reading comments or sending messages at all. This is not a limitation any particular tool chose; it is how Meta has structured access.
Be sceptical of any service that claims to automate a personal Instagram account. Doing so requires simulating the app or logging in with your password, which violates Instagram's terms and is a common way accounts get restricted.
Why a Facebook Page is part of the requirement
Professional Instagram accounts authenticate through Facebook Login rather than an Instagram-only screen, and permissions are granted against a linked Facebook Page. That is why connecting a tool sends you through a Facebook consent screen even though you only care about Instagram — the Page is where the API permissions actually live.
You do not need to post on the Facebook Page or maintain an audience there. It exists as the permission holder for the connection. If you do not have one, creating it takes a couple of minutes and it can stay effectively empty.
How to switch to a Professional account
Switching is free, reversible, and does not affect your followers, existing posts, or username. In the Instagram app, open Settings, find the account section, and choose to switch to a Professional account. You will be asked to pick Business or Creator, then given the option to link a Facebook Page.
- Creator: aimed at individual creators and public figures. Fine for comment-to-DM automation.
- Business: aimed at brands, shops, and service businesses. Also fine, and includes contact buttons.
- Either type works with the API — pick whichever describes you. You can change it later.
What actually changes after switching
You gain access to insights, contact options, and the API. The most commonly cited downside is that Professional accounts cannot use some music tracks that are licensed for personal use only. For most businesses that is a non-issue; if you rely heavily on trending audio, it is worth knowing before you switch.
Switching back to a personal account is possible at any time, but it will immediately break any automation connected to the account, since the API access disappears with it.
